Why don’t magicians combine cardistry and manipulation? Are they stupid?
I’m not actually joking. I am aware that there is some overlap of the two disciplines. But it feels like there is some taboo in the manipulation and cardistry community that prevents people from combining the two artforms. I have the vaguest sense that manipulation is entertainment for the ultrawealthy old money types and cardistry came up from the streets in the early 2000s and took over the world (briefly).
Maybe its the nonchalance with which the manipulators drop their cards to the ground which angers the cardists. (Manipulators probably all have maids and butlers so they don’t have to pick up the cards themselves.) Maybe its because there are no good youtube tutorials for manipulation so millenials had to invent their own way of killing time with playing cards.
I just think it would be a neat effect to show a deck of cards and make packets slowly disappear. Or the reverse where the magician produces cards from nothing into a display.
There’s a lot of space to be explored.
The hiphop aesthetic has already infiltrated the FISM manipulation competition so perhaps 2028 will be the year cardists finally rebreak into the magic mainstream.
